THE WHISPER APP: SAFETY FOR HUMANITY

Intro: A safety app from the whisper community, that hopes to create a safe place for women and girls while creating a tight-knit community. 

 

As cases of sexual abuse, harassment, and assault seem to be on the rise, the need for the safety of women and girls is becoming increasingly paramount, yet difficult. 

 

According to documented reports, “3 in 10 Nigerians have disclosed they know someone who has been sexually assaulted or harassed.” This is roughly twenty-six percent of the country’s population. https://reliefweb.int/report/nigeria/sexual-violence-why-rise

 

This raises concerns among women and girls across the country and even a national concern. The need to protect themselves is resulting in the development of new tactics. These tactics include pepper spray buying, avoiding certain places totally, and even for some refusing to go to places alone without the aid of a man. This places a lot of limitations on women and girls. 

 

Innovations are necessary for human growth. Not only do they pave the way for safety, but they also provide comfort. The Whisper app is one of the few innovations that aim at protecting and safeguarding women and girls in Nigeria and beyond. 

 

The creation of this mobile app became more urgent with the insecurity and random arrest of young women and girls during the EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

With the world’s dependence on technology, the Whisper app is set to build the safety bridge with ease. It provides a safe place that comes with accessible features for all. The newly developed app contains amazing features like;

•​A user registration and login: This keeps the registration details and enables people to choose their guardians and accept a guardian request. 

•​Real-time user tracking: This contains the tracking feature that enables the user to stay tracked only by her guardian and the Admin team of the app when she clicks the track me button. This real-time GPS is done with the consent of the user. It provides the location of the user and helps for fast location tracking in the case of danger. 

•​An emergency number and alarm icon: This is a distressing feature that enables distress messages and calls. When in danger or fear, users click on this to get help. This also enables users to add their emergency numbers that can send help urgently. 

•​The Harmful Spot feature: This enables the user to mark harmful spots or loggings on the map. Users get a beeping signal to warn them of unsafe spaces that are already registered on the app.

•​There is an offenders village for users to either go through or make cases about sex offenders known. 

•​The app links users to the Whisper mini-community for women and girls. 

•​Voting polls, comment and like options, are among the many features. 

•​It contains an admin panel that is run by professionals. Grievances, opinions and general comments are quickly addressed.

Users with Valuable information are safely guarded and protected.

 

The whispers app provides these and many more. Women and girls are assured of anonymity, a room to breathe, a safe community, and a place to create relationships. 

 

This is very commendable and would be one of its first kinds in Nigeria and across Africa. 

 

The app is a free safety app, available in its APK version for download and will be easily downloadable from all mobile phone’s app store by 6th February 2021.

 

This app gets better by also providing you with conversant trending topics you can learn from, affirmations and self-care tips. It is available for download and usage for everyone in English speaking regions and nations.
